Barry Schwartz on Wisdom

Too much compassion can cloud judgment, but there is a middle ground.  Discernment of the right moral path depending on the situation.  I realized the other day that in Chinese, the word for law is also the word for path and method: 法.  It’s also the same word for the Buddhist concept of dharma.

Beautiful.  The law in this sense is closer to what in English might be natural law, organic law (in the non-legal jargon sense), knowing the way through wisdom from empathy, lived experience and thus more flexible than anything written in stone.  It’s not just procedure for the sake of procedure, or even procedure for the sake of order, but for the attainment of an ethical goal.
